The market in figures
Local Search Competition Index
46.4/ 100
Sitting at rank 1,014 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 338 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Johnston County scores 46.4, which is near the middle of the pack.
What shapes SEO in Johnston County is more than the score. It is a county with heavy new home construction for its size, and it is one of the faster-growing counties in the country. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
The bars place Johnston County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where the customers are
The Census Bureau's latest estimates, by place. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Community | Residents (2023 est.) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Clayton (part) | 30,216 | 12% |
| Smithfield | 12,468 | 5% |
| Selma | 7,012 | 3% |
| Archer Lodge | 5,365 | 2% |
| Benson (part) | 4,401 | 2% |
| Wilson's Mills | 2,820 | 1% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. Places are cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city runs into a neighboring county, only the part inside Johnston County is counted.
What shapes local search here
Johnston County builds a lot for its size: 3,002 housing units were authorized in 2025, 124.1 per 10,000 residents, more than in 97% of counties. SEO takes time to build, so the businesses that start before new households arrive are the ones those households find when they begin searching.
Johnston County has 241,955 residents, which ranks 293rd of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +12% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 3,975 employer locations, 16.4 per 1,000 residents.
The larger places in Johnston County are Clayton (30,216), Smithfield (12,468), Selma (7,012), Archer Lodge (5,365) and Benson (4,401). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
71% of residents (171,456 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Where demand is heading
New housing units authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Johnston County authorized 3,520 housing units in 2021 and 3,002 in 2025, about 15% fewer; 2025 still works out to 124.1 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 97% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,908 against 2,080 a year earlier (−8.3%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Johnston County are roofing contractors (2.7x typical) and electrical contractors (1.7x typical). SEO takes time to build, so start before the demand shows up; pages that are already indexed and ranking meet new households first.
Who else is in the results
For each local-search category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. Read 2.0x as twice as many businesses per resident as a typical county.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. How we calculate this
The electrical contractors category is the most contested in Johnston County: 91 locations, 1.7x the density of a typical county, and up 42.2% since 2017. Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (127 locations, 1.6x) and real estate agents and brokers (87 locations, 1.4x) also run above a normal county. The physicians offices category is the least contested here at 0.5x typical (52 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 93.3% since 2017 to 87 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 18.7% to 52 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 80 of 87 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
A word of caution: these are business counts and say nothing about searches. We do not have, and do not claim, search volumes or traffic for any keyword; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.

Johnson County, TX is the closest match, scoring 44.5 against Johnston County's 46.4. Clay County, FL is the furthest from it, scoring 55.7. Henry County, GA has 58.1% of its local-search locations under five employees against 62.7% in Johnston County. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

North Carolina rules for advertisers
A lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. The rule's own examples include statements likely to create an unjustified expectation about results and comparisons with other lawyers that cannot be factually substantiated. In practice, ad headlines such as "#1 attorney" or "we win every case" are risky unless they can be substantiated.
North Carolina requires a general contractor license where the cost of the undertaking is $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1; the threshold was raised from $30,000 by S.L. 2023-108). The Licensing Board's rule 21 NCAC 12A .0501 requires the license number on contracts and bids. Separate licensing boards cover electrical and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, so an ad should never suggest a license the business does not hold.

Your website and Google Business Profile are advertising too. Plain-language pointers to the rules named above, checked against the cited sources on October 16, 2026. Questions we hear
We charge a flat monthly fee with no setup fee and no contract: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. The Gold and Platinum plans add a fully managed, custom-built website.
Nobody can promise a date for SEO, because it builds gradually. How fast pages climb depends on the competition in your category, the strength of your website and Google Business Profile, and how much we can build. In Johnston County, electrical contractors is especially contested (1.7x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We work in six-month planning cycles, with no contract, and report each month.
About average. Johnston County scores 46.4 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 1014th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 338th of the 400 markets we cover. Electrical contractors, at 1.7 times the typical county. 62.7% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That argues for starting early: consistent SEO tends to hold its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Johnston County are plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (127), full-service restaurants (111) and electrical contractors (91). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are electrical contractors (1.7x) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (1.6x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever you serve. Johnston County has 7 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, Archer Lodge and Benson. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and much of what people search for in Johnston County depends on them.
It can help. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and a single account manager familiar with your Johnston County business.
