GetPhound is a search engine optimization agency for small businesses: local landing pages for every city you serve, Google Maps and AI search work, flat monthly plans and no contracts. The data behind the Livingston County market follows.
The market in numbers
Local Search Competition Index
66.1/ 100
Rank 351 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 157 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Livingston County scores 66.1, which is more contested than most.
Two things stand out about Livingston County: it is a county where many residents live outside any city or town, and it is a high-income county. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
The bars place Livingston County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes local search here
A large share of Livingston County (88%, or 173,507 residents) lives in unincorporated areas, higher than in 95% of counties. Local SEO here has to reach people who do not live in a named city, which is a matter of service-area pages, map settings and county-level content.
Livingston County has 196,757 residents, which ranks 354th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +1.5% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 4,439 employer locations, 22.6 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Livingston County: the largest, Howell, has about 5% of residents, and others include Brighton (7,958), Fowlerville (2,931), Pinckney (2,353) and Fenton (0). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
Who else is in the results
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. Read 2.0x as double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. How we calculate this
In Livingston County, the residential remodelers category is the most contested, with 119 locations at 2.0 times the typical density, up 16.7% since 2017. Landscaping services (124 locations, 1.9x) and beauty salons (52 locations, 1.6x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the full-service restaurants category (109 locations) is below typical density at 0.8x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 20.3% since 2017 to 71 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Electrical contractors went the other way, down 7.5% to 62 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 65 of 71 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
Remember that this is only a count of local businesses. We do not guess at search volume or climbing speed, which this count cannot show; it tells you how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Where demand is heading
Housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Livingston County authorized 1,145 housing units in 2022 and 531 in 2025, about 54% fewer; 2025 still works out to 27 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 51% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 403 against 325 a year earlier (+24%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Livingston County are residential remodelers (2.0x typical) and landscaping services (1.9x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

Questions we hear
Pricing is flat and monthly. RankGuarantee™, our system for local landing pages, is $495 a month on its own. The Organic Growth plans add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, and cost $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). No setup fee, no contract.
No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Rankings build over time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we can publish. Residential remodelers is the most contested category in Livingston County at 2.0x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. You see the movement each month in six-month planning cycles, and you can cancel anytime.
More than most. Livingston County scores 66.1 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 351st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 157th of the 400 markets we cover. Residential remodelers, at 2.0 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 60.2% of local-search locations, which commonly means thin websites to outrank. If anything, it makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews matter more.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Livingston County are landscaping services (124), residential remodelers (119) and full-service restaurants (109). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are residential remodelers (2.0x) and landscaping services (1.9x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Livingston County has 3 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Howell, Brighton and Fowlerville. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most of the local categories in Livingston County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Usually a mix of both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
There is no contract and no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. What you pay each month includes onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content in your plan, continuing page management and rank tracking, and one account manager who sends you a report every month.
