Local Search Competition Index
53.6/ 100
Sitting at rank 736 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 280 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Citrus County scores 53.6, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about Citrus County: it is a county where many residents live outside any city or town, and it is a county with heavy new home construction for its size. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar places Citrus County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
A large share of Citrus County (93%, or 155,325 residents) lives in unincorporated areas, higher than in 98% of counties. Local SEO here has to reach people who do not live in a named city, which is a matter of service-area pages, map settings and county-level content.
Citrus County has 166,696 residents, which ranks 410th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +8.4% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 3,008 employer locations, 18.0 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Citrus County: the largest, Inverness, has about 5% of residents, and others include Crystal River (3,514). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
Who you would rank against
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. How we calculate this
In Citrus County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 110 locations at 2.6 times the typical density, up 57.1% since 2017. Physicians offices (132 locations, 2.0x) and landscaping services (74 locations, 1.4x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the full-service restaurants category (97 locations) is below typical density at 0.9x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 57.1%, so the competition is still building. Physicians offices went the other way, down 13.7% to 132 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 102 of 110 locations (93%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so a crowded category calls for planning and a quiet one is an opening.
Where demand is heading
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Permits in Citrus County have stayed within a narrow range: 2,102 units in 2025 against 1,983 in 2021, or 126.1 per 10,000 residents, more than in 97% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,271 against 1,403 a year earlier (−9.4%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Citrus County are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and landscaping services (1.4x typical). SEO takes time to build, so start before the demand shows up; pages already indexed and ranking are the ones new households meet first.
Similar markets
We matched Citrus County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Market | Score | People | Growth since 2020 | Change in local-search businesses since 2017 | Locations under 5 staff |

| Mohave County, AZ | 52.8 | 223,682 | +4.9% | +15.8% | 60.6% |

| Alachua County, FL | 62.7 | 285,994 | +2.7% | +9.8% | 58.4% |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources are listed above.
Mohave County, AZ is the closest match, scoring 52.8 against Citrus County's 53.6. Davidson County, NC is the furthest from it, scoring 40.7. The small-business mix differs too: 56.9% of Pitt County, NC's locations have fewer than five employees, against 60.6% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.

Questions
You pay a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page system, is $495 a month on its own. Organic Growth plans, which add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Results build gradually and depend on the competition, your website and what we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Citrus County at 2.6x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We plan in six-month cycles and show you the movement monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Citrus County scores 53.6 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 736th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 280th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 2.6 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 60.6% of local-search locations, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: consistent SEO tends to hold ground where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Citrus County are physicians offices (132), real estate agents and brokers (110) and full-service restaurants (97). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x) and physicians offices (2.0x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever you serve. Citrus County has 2 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Inverness and Crystal River. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in Citrus County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
No contract, no setup fee, cancel anytime. The monthly fee covers onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, continuing page management and rank tracking, and a dedicated account manager who reports to you monthly.
