The market in figures
Local Search Competition Index
64.9/ 100
Sitting at rank 380 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 169 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Contra Costa County scores 64.9, which is near the middle of the pack.
Two features set Contra Costa County apart: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is also a high-income county. The eight measures that follow place it among every other county.
Each bar compares Contra Costa County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where the customers are
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| City or town | People (2023 est.) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Concord | 122,315 | 11% |
| Antioch | 117,096 | 10% |
| Richmond | 114,106 | 10% |
| San Ramon | 84,929 | 7% |
| Pittsburg | 75,803 | 7% |
| Walnut Creek | 69,152 | 6% |
Data: the Census Bureau's Population Estimates. Places are cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Contra Costa County.
What shapes local search here
Many towns, many searches: Contra Costa County counts 19 places of 2,500 or more residents (19 above 10,000), more than 98% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Contra Costa County has 1,155,025 residents, which ranks 41st of 3,143 U.S. counties; its population has moved −0.9% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 25,646 employer locations, 22.2 per 1,000 residents.
15% of residents (173,964 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Who you would rank against
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. How we calculate this
In Contra Costa County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 758 locations at 2.6 times the typical density, up 42.2% since 2017. Dentists (727 locations, 2.3x) and residential remodelers (704 locations, 2.0x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category (318 locations) is below typical density at 0.9x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 42.2%, so the competition is still building. Physicians offices went the other way, down 5.3% to 594 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 682 of 758 locations (90%) have fewer than five employees.
The figures show who competes, not how much demand there is. How many people search for a service and how quickly a page can rank depend on factors public data does not show, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Demand signal
New housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Contra Costa County authorized 3,901 housing units in 2021 and 1,184 in 2025, about 70% fewer; 2025 still works out to 10.3 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 81% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,615 against 821 a year earlier (+96.7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Contra Costa County are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and residential remodelers (2.0x typical). Rankings take time, so a rise in permits is a reason to begin now, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

Questions we hear
You pay a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page engine, is $495 a month on its own. Organic Growth plans, which add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). There is no setup fee and no contract.
No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Rankings build over time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Contra Costa County at 2.6x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We plan in six-month cycles and show you the movement monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Contra Costa County scores 64.9 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 380th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 169th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 2.6 times the typical county. 61.4% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops frequently have thin websites to outrank. That is a case for starting early: steady SEO tends to hold its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Contra Costa County are full-service restaurants (779), real estate agents and brokers (758) and dentists (727). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x) and dentists (2.3x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever you serve. Contra Costa County has 19 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Concord, Antioch, Richmond, San Ramon and Pittsburg. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most of the local categories in Contra Costa County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, page management and rank tracking, and a dedicated account manager who reports to you monthly.
