The market in figures
Local Search Competition Index
63.9/ 100
Sitting at rank 423 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 184 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Fairfax County scores 63.9, which is near the middle of the pack.
Two features set Fairfax County apart: it is a county where many residents live outside any city or town, and it is also a high-income county. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
Each bar compares Fairfax County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Communities
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| City or town | Residents (2023 estimate) | Share of county |
|---|---|---|
| Herndon (part) | 24,935 | 2% |
| Vienna | 16,306 | 1% |
| Clifton | 240 | 0% |
| Occoquan (part) | 0 | 0% |

What shapes local search here
A large share of Fairfax County (96%, or 1,100,397 residents) lives in unincorporated areas, higher than in 99% of counties. Local SEO here has to reach people who do not live in a named city, which is a matter of service-area pages, map settings and county-level content.
Fairfax County has 1,141,878 residents, which ranks 42nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted −0.7% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 31,739 employer locations, 27.8 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Fairfax County: the largest, Herndon, has about 2% of residents, and others include Vienna (16,306), Clifton (240) and Occoquan (0). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
Your competition
This table sets Fairfax County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: the number of locations, how that number has moved, and how many are very small.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not search volumes. How we calculate this
In Fairfax County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 734 locations at 2.6 times the typical density, up 12.4% since 2017. Dentists (803 locations, 2.5x) and beauty salons (380 locations, 2.1x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the general automotive repair category (182 locations) is below typical density at 0.6x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 14.9% since 2017 to 626 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 8.4% to 272 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 663 of 734 locations (90%) have fewer than five employees.
The figures show who competes, not how much demand there is. How many people search for a service and how quickly a page can rank depend on factors public data does not show, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Where demand is heading
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Permits in Fairfax County have stayed within a narrow range: 2,862 units in 2025 against 2,105 in 2021, or 25.1 per 10,000 residents, less than in 54% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 2,612 against 2,257 a year earlier (+15.7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Fairfax County are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and residential remodelers (1.8x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

Questions
Pricing is flat and monthly. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page system, is $495 a month on its own. The Organic Growth plans add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, and cost $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). There is no honest fixed timeline for SEO. Results build gradually and depend on the competition, your website and what we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Fairfax County at 2.6x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We work in six-month cycles, show you the movement each month, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Fairfax County scores 63.9 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 423rd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 184th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 2.6 times the typical county. 58% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a case for starting early: consistent SEO tends to hold ground where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Fairfax County are full-service restaurants (904), dentists (803) and physicians offices (789). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x) and dentists (2.5x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Fairfax County has 2 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Herndon and Vienna. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in Fairfax County rely on them.
It can help. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the pages and content that come with your plan, continuing page management and rank tracking, and one account manager who sends you a report every month.
