Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
69.5/ 100
Ranked 275 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 120 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Hennepin County scores 69.5, which is more contested than most.
What shapes SEO in Hennepin County is more than the score. It is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a high-income county. The eight measures that follow place it among every other county.
The bars place Hennepin County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
The search picture
Many towns, many searches: Hennepin County counts 31 places of 2,500 or more residents (19 above 10,000), more than 99% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Hennepin County has 1,258,713 residents, which ranks 34th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted −1.8% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 40,654 employer locations, 32.3 per 1,000 residents.
The field you would rank in
This table sets Hennepin County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations there are, how that has changed, and how many are very small.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. See the method
In Hennepin County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 1,156 locations at 3.7 times the typical density, up 18.3% since 2017. Law offices (896 locations, 2.5x) and beauty salons (453 locations, 2.3x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category (241 locations) is below typical density at 0.6x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Roofing contractors grew fastest, up 24.5% since 2017 to 117 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 10.1% to 275 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 1,061 of 1,156 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep in mind that this is a count of local businesses. It tells you nothing about search volume or how quickly a site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it tells you how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
New construction
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Hennepin County authorized 9,409 housing units in 2022 and 3,648 in 2025, about 61% fewer; 2025 still works out to 29 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 52% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 2,250 against 2,740 a year earlier (−17.9%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Hennepin County are real estate agents and brokers (3.7x typical) and residential remodelers (1.9x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Markets like this one

Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
Baltimore County, MD is the closest match, scoring 69.2 against Hennepin County's 69.5. Middlesex County, NJ is the furthest from it, scoring 60.4. The small-business mix differs too: 56.4% of Oakland County, MI's locations have fewer than five employees, against 61.4% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.

FAQ
Pricing is flat and monthly. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page engine, is $495 a month on its own. There is no setup fee and no contract.
A fixed SEO timeline would not be honest. Results build gradually and depend on the competition, your website and what we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Hennepin County at 3.7x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. You see the movement every month in six-month planning cycles, and you can cancel anytime.
More than most. Hennepin County scores 69.5 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 275th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 120th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 3.7 times the typical county. 61.4% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Hennepin County are real estate agents and brokers (1,156), full-service restaurants (927) and law offices (896). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (3.7x) and law offices (2.5x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever ones you cover. Hennepin County has 31 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Minneapolis, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth and Maple Grove. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most of the local categories in Hennepin County rely on them.
It may. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Often both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, page management and rank tracking, and one dedicated account manager who reports to you each month.
