Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
61.3/ 100
Ranked 492 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 219 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Dane County scores 61.3, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two features set Dane County apart: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is also a county with heavy new home construction for its size. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
Each bar sets Dane County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
The largest places in Dane County by resident count. A local SEO plan can build pages for any of them, one per service you offer in each.
| Community | People (2023 estimate) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Madison | 280,305 | 49% |
| Sun Prairie | 37,890 | 7% |
| Fitchburg | 32,284 | 6% |
| Middleton | 22,967 | 4% |
| Verona | 15,815 | 3% |
| Waunakee | 15,152 | 3% |

What stands out
Many towns, many searches: Dane County counts 17 places of 2,500 or more residents (9 above 10,000), more than 97% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Dane County has 575,347 residents, which ranks 123rd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +2.5% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 14,676 employer locations, 25.5 per 1,000 residents.
Who else is in the results
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. A 2.0x reading means twice as many businesses per resident as a typical county.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. How we calculate this
In Dane County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 334 locations at 2.3 times the typical density, up 34.7% since 2017. Beauty salons (193 locations, 2.1x) and janitorial services (164 locations, 1.9x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the physicians offices category (119 locations) is below typical density at 0.5x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 34.7%, so the competition is still building. Insurance agencies and brokerages went the other way, down 8.5% to 238 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 296 of 334 locations (89%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a headcount of local businesses. It says nothing about search volume or how fast any site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Housing demand
Units authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Permits in Dane County have stayed within a narrow range: 6,673 units in 2025 against 6,836 in 2021, or 116 per 10,000 residents, more than in 96% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 3,297 against 3,942 a year earlier (−16.4%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Dane County are real estate agents and brokers (2.3x typical) and roofing contractors (1.4x typical). Rankings take time, so a rise in permits is a reason to begin now, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Look-alike markets
We matched Dane County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Market | Index | People | Growth since 2020 | Change in local-search businesses since 2017 | Locations under 5 staff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dane County, WI (this page) | 61.3 | 575,347 | +2.5% | +3.9% | 55.5% |
| Camden County, NJ | 58.8 | 527,196 | +0.7% | -5.2% | 55.4% |
| Burlington County, NJ | 60.1 | 469,167 | +1.6% | -1.8% | 56.8% |
| St. Charles County, MO | 62 | 416,659 | +2.8% | +7.1% | 58% |
| Lancaster County, PA | 62.6 | 558,589 | +1% | +6.1% | 52.2% |
| Polk County, IA | 71.4 | 505,255 | +2.6% | +8.5% | 58.4% |
| Berks County, PA | 54.7 | 432,821 | +0.9% | +2% | 57.7% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
Camden County, NJ is the closest match, scoring 58.8 against Dane County's 61.3. Polk County, IA is the furthest from it, scoring 71.4. The small-business mix differs too: 52.2% of Lancaster County, PA's locations have fewer than five employees, against 55.5% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Questions
Pricing is flat and monthly. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page engine, is $495 a month on its own. Organic Growth plans, which bring in Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, run $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). There is no setup fee and no contract.
There is no honest fixed timeline for SEO. Rankings take time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Dane County at 2.3x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We work in six-month cycles, show you the movement each month, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Dane County scores 61.3 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 492nd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 219th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers is the densest category here, at 2.3 times the typical county. 55.5% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which frequently means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: consistent SEO tends to hold ground where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Dane County are full-service restaurants (478), real estate agents and brokers (334) and landscaping services (242). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.3x) and beauty salons (2.1x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Dane County has 17 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Madison, Sun Prairie, Fitchburg, Middleton and Verona. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches like "near me", and most of the local categories in Dane County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. What you pay each month includes onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the pages and content that come with your plan, ongoing page management and rank tracking, and one account manager who sends you a report every month.
