Market at a glance
Local Search Competition Index
52.8/ 100
Ranked 783 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 294 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How the score works
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. St. Louis scores 52.8, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about St. Louis: it is a city whose population is flat or shrinking, and it is a city with little new home construction for its size. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Every bar compares St. Louis against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
A flat population (−6.6% since the 2020 Census, 281,754 residents) means St. Louis is not going to grow its way out of competition. Local SEO is how an established business protects its place in the search results and how a challenger takes someone else's.
With 281,754 residents in one city, competition in St. Louis is decided block by block. Map rankings, reviews and neighborhood-aware pages carry more weight than a single citywide page.
New construction
New housing units authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
St. Louis authorized 1,176 housing units in 2022 and 272 in 2025, about 77% fewer; 2025 still works out to 9.7 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 82% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 219 against 191 a year earlier (+14.7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in St. Louis are roofing contractors (1.5x typical) and real estate agents and brokers (1.4x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Who you would rank against
The table below measures St. Louis against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations there are, how that has changed, and how many are very small.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. See the method
In St. Louis, the law offices category is the most contested, with 247 locations at 3.0 times the typical density, down 15.7% since 2017. Full-service restaurants (333 locations, 1.8x) and janitorial services (69 locations, 1.6x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the landscaping services category (55 locations) is below typical density at 0.6x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 42.1% since 2017 to 81 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. General automotive repair went the other way, down 16.3% to 72 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 82 of 95 locations (86%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. Search volume and how fast a page can rank depend on factors that public data does not reveal, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Comparable counties
We matched St. Louis to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| County | LSCI | Residents | Growth since 2020 | Change in local-search businesses since 2017 | Tiny locations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| St. Louis, MO (this market) | 52.8 | 281,754 | -6.6% | -0.3% | 52.8% |
| Montgomery County, AL | 52 | 224,980 | -1.7% | -4.7% | 51.6% |
| Jefferson County, TX | 48.4 | 251,496 | -2% | -5.6% | 54.7% |
| Norfolk, VA | 50.1 | 230,930 | -3% | +4.1% | 50.7% |
| Mahoning County, OH | 54.6 | 225,596 | -1.3% | -8% | 53.9% |
| Erie County, PA | 54 | 267,571 | -1.2% | -3.6% | 51.7% |
| Saginaw County, MI | 51.6 | 187,782 | -1.2% | -5.5% | 53.1% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Montgomery County, AL is the closest match, scoring 52 against St. Louis's 52.8. Jefferson County, TX is the furthest from it, scoring 48.4. The small-business mix differs too: 50.7% of Norfolk, VA's locations have fewer than five employees, against 52.8% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
Do the math
Whether SEO is worth it in St. Louis comes down to your numbers, not an average. Put in your own figures to find the customers per month that cover a plan, and over the period you select.

A fixed SEO timeline would not be honest. Results build gradually and depend on the competition, your website and what we can publish. Law offices is the most contested category in St. Louis at 3.0x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We plan in six-month cycles and show you the movement monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. St. Louis scores 52.8 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 783rd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 294th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices, at 3.0 times the typical county. That is a reason to start early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in St. Louis are full-service restaurants (333), law offices (247) and physicians offices (170). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (3.0x) and full-service restaurants (1.8x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Yes. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for the services and the places you serve, and in a dense city like St. Louis that means pages aimed at the neighborhoods and nearby areas where your customers actually are, alongside your Google Business Profile.
Absolutely. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and much of what people search for in St. Louis depends on them.
It can help. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, page management and rank tracking, and one account manager who sends you a report each month.
