Market at a glance
Local Search Competition Index
62/ 100
Ranked 475 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 211 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. St. Charles County scores 62, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about St. Charles County: it is a high-income county, and it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar sets St. Charles County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
The search picture
St. Charles County is an affluent market: median household income is $98,765, higher than 93% of U.S. counties. Customers with that kind of budget tend to research before they hire, so reviews, depth of content and a website that explains the work carry more weight than a single ranking. Search engine optimization here means being credible on every page a buyer might open.
St. Charles County has 416,659 residents, which ranks 178th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +2.8% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 8,974 employer locations, 21.5 per 1,000 residents.
The larger places in St. Charles County are O'Fallon (94,074), St. Charles (71,800), St. Peters (59,413), Wentzville (47,497) and Lake St. Louis (18,661). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
22% of residents (93,218 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
The field you would rank in
For each local-search category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
The real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested in St. Charles County: 198 locations, 1.9x the density of a typical county, and up 53.5% since 2017. Janitorial services (97 locations, 1.5x) and residential remodelers (190 locations, 1.5x) also run above a normal county. The plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category is the least contested here at 0.8x typical (112 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 53.5%, so the competition is still building. Beauty salons went the other way, down 19.3% to 92 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 183 of 198 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so a crowded category calls for planning and a quiet one is an opening.
Demand signal
Units authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
St. Charles County authorized 3,100 housing units in 2021 and 1,661 in 2025, about 46% fewer; 2025 still works out to 39.9 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 64% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,589 against 1,155 a year earlier (+37.6%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in St. Charles County are real estate agents and brokers (1.9x typical) and roofing contractors (1.5x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

Dakota County, MN has 62.3% of its local-search locations under five employees against 58% in St. Charles County. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.

SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. The speed of the climb depends on the competition in your category, the strength of your website and Google Business Profile, and how much we can build. In St. Charles County, real estate agents and brokers is especially contested (1.9x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
About average. St. Charles County scores 62 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 475th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 211th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers leads on density, at 1.9 times the typical county. 58% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops often have thin websites to outrank. That is a case for starting early: steady SEO tends to hold its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in St. Charles County are full-service restaurants (305), insurance agencies and brokerages (222) and landscaping services (200). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (1.9x) and janitorial services (1.5x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
The ones you serve. St. Charles County has 9 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by O'Fallon, St. Charles, St. Peters, Wentzville and Lake St. Louis. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in St. Charles County rely on them.
It can. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Often both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy up front, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your St. Charles County business.
