Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
72.2/ 100
Ranked 217 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 92 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Albany County scores 72.2, which is more contested than most.
Two things stand out about Albany County: it is a county with unusually many local-search businesses for its size, and it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
The bars place Albany County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes local search here
Local search is contested ground in Albany County: 62.1 employer locations per 10,000 residents across the 15 categories we track, denser than 85% of counties. With that many businesses chasing the same map pack and first-page results, a generic website loses; pages that target a specific service in a specific city have a better chance.
Albany County has 316,659 residents, which ranks 230th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +0.6% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 9,394 employer locations, 29.7 per 1,000 residents.
The larger places in Albany County are Albany (101,228), Cohoes (18,206), Watervliet (10,170), Colonie (7,622) and Menands (4,461). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
52% of residents (164,369 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Population by place
The largest places in Albany County by resident count. A local SEO plan can build pages for any of them, one per service you offer in each.
| Place | Residents (2023 est.) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Albany | 101,228 | 32% |
| Cohoes | 18,206 | 6% |
| Watervliet | 10,170 | 3% |
| Colonie | 7,622 | 2% |
| Menands | 4,461 | 1% |
| Ravena | 3,213 | 1% |

Who you would rank against
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not search volumes. Method
The law offices category is the most contested in Albany County: 280 locations, 3.1x the density of a typical county, and down 7.9% since 2017. Beauty salons (103 locations, 2.0x) and physicians offices (210 locations, 1.6x) also run above a normal county. The plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category is the least contested here at 1.0x typical (101 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 28.4% since 2017 to 149 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 16.1% to 52 locations. The tiniest competitors are in residential remodelers: 128 of 149 locations (86%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep this in mind: this counts businesses, not searches. No keyword search volume or traffic figures are claimed here; a crowded category means more sites in the race, not a prediction of results.
Comparable counties
We matched Albany County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| County | LSCI | People | Change since 2020 | Change in local-search businesses since 2017 | Locations under 5 staff |

| Albany County, NY (this market) | 72.2 | 316,659 | +0.6% | -3.7% | 53.2% |
| Henrico County, VA | 71.1 | 334,760 | -0.1% | -1.4% | 53.2% |
| Atlantic County, NJ | 66.5 | 275,213 | +0.2% | -1.4% | 56.2% |
| Lehigh County, PA | 58.9 | 377,754 | +0.8% | -7.5% | 53.6% |

| Dauphin County, PA | 59 | 289,234 | +1% | +4.6% | 51.5% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Henrico County, VA is the closest match, scoring 71.1 against Albany County's 72.2. Brown County, WI is the furthest from it, scoring 57.2. Atlantic County, NJ has 56.2% of its local-search locations under five employees against 53.2% in Albany County. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
New construction
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Albany County authorized 973 housing units in 2022 and 681 in 2025, about 30% fewer; 2025 still works out to 21.5 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 60% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 392 against 514 a year earlier (−23.7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Albany County are residential remodelers (1.6x typical) and electrical contractors (1.2x typical). Because SEO builds gradually, the best time to start is before demand arrives; new households meet the pages that are already indexed and ranking.

SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. How quickly pages climb depends on the competition in your category, the strength of your website and Google Business Profile, and how much we can build. In Albany County, law offices is especially contested (3.1x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. Albany County scores 72.2 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 217th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 92nd of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices leads on density, at 3.1 times the typical county. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Albany County are full-service restaurants (317), law offices (280) and physicians offices (210). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (3.1x) and beauty salons (2.0x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Whichever you serve. Albany County has 8 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Albany, Cohoes, Watervliet, Colonie and Menands. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches such as "near me", and most of the local categories in Albany County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy up front, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and a single account manager familiar with your Albany County business.
