Local Search Competition Index
66.5/ 100
Sitting at rank 344 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 153 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Atlantic County scores 66.5, which is more contested than most.
Two things stand out about Atlantic County: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county with unusually many local-search businesses for its size. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar places Atlantic County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Atlantic County has 12 places with 2,500 or more residents, 4 of them above 10,000, more than 94% of counties. Each is its own search market: people look for a plumber in Atlantic City or in the next town over, not in the county. Local SEO means giving each of those cities its own page for each service you offer, which is what RankGuarantee™ is built to produce.
Atlantic County has 275,213 residents, which ranks 260th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +0.2% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 6,210 employer locations, 22.6 per 1,000 residents.
47% of residents (129,537 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Who else is in the results
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not search volumes. Method
The beauty salons category is the most contested in Atlantic County: 97 locations, 2.2x the density of a typical county, and up 6.6% since 2017. Janitorial services (87 locations, 2.1x) and full-service restaurants (331 locations, 1.8x) also run above a normal county. The insurance agencies and brokerages category is the least contested here at 0.6x typical (63 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 28.9% since 2017 to 125 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Dentists went the other way, down 20.6% to 77 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 53 of 63 locations (84%) have fewer than five employees.
Remember that this is only a count of local businesses. It says nothing about search volume or how fast any site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Atlantic County authorized 804 housing units in 2021 and 656 in 2025, about 18% fewer; 2025 still works out to 23.8 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 56% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 436 against 396 a year earlier (+10.1%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Atlantic County are landscaping services (1.7x typical) and residential remodelers (1.5x typical). SEO builds gradually, so the time to start is before the demand arrives; new households meet the pages that are already indexed and ranking.
Markets like this one
We matched Atlantic County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Place | LSCI | People | Population change since 2020 | Local-business change since 2017 | Share under 5 employees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atlantic County, NJ (this page) | 66.5 | 275,213 | +0.2% | -1.4% | 56.2% |
| New London County, CT | 61.1 | 268,805 | +0.1% | -0.5% | 58% |
| Washington County, PA | 65.2 | 210,232 | +0.4% | +1.3% | 59.4% |
| Albany County, NY | 72.2 | 316,659 | +0.6% | -3.7% | 53.2% |
| Lehigh County, PA | 58.9 | 377,754 | +0.8% | -7.5% | 53.6% |
| St. Louis County, MN | 59.4 | 200,514 | +0.1% | +2.6% | 53.9% |
| Madison County, IL | 57.9 | 262,752 | -1.2% | -3.6% | 56.5% |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources are listed above.
New London County, CT is the closest match, scoring 61.1 against Atlantic County's 66.5. Madison County, IL is the furthest from it, scoring 57.9. The small-business mix differs too: 59.4% of Washington County, PA's locations have fewer than five employees, against 56.2% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
Where the customers are
Here is each place's population, taken from the Census Bureau's newest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Place name | Residents (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic City | 38,464 | 14% |
| Pleasantville | 20,613 | 7% |
| Hammonton | 14,797 | 5% |
| Somers Point | 10,465 | 4% |
| Ventnor City | 9,226 | 3% |
| Absecon | 9,130 | 3% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. The list covers cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city spills into a neighboring county, only the part inside Atlantic County is counted.

SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Atlantic County, beauty salons is especially contested (2.2x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. Atlantic County scores 66.5 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 344th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 153rd of the 400 markets we cover. Beauty salons, at 2.2 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 56.2% of local-search locations, which frequently means thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Atlantic County are full-service restaurants (331), physicians offices (185) and landscaping services (149). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are beauty salons (2.2x) and janitorial services (2.1x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever you serve. Atlantic County has 12 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Atlantic City, Pleasantville, Hammonton, Somers Point and Ventnor City. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in Atlantic County depend on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Usually a mix of both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
You can cancel anytime and there is no setup fee. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and an account manager who knows your Atlantic County business.
