Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
73.7/ 100
Ranked 186 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 75 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Allegheny County scores 73.7, which is more contested than most.
What shapes SEO in Allegheny County is more than the score. It is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county whose population is flat or shrinking. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar places Allegheny County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where the customers are
Here is each place's population, taken from the Census Bureau's newest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Place name | Residents (2023 est.) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Pittsburgh | 303,255 | 25% |
| Bethel Park | 32,398 | 3% |
| Monroeville | 27,974 | 2% |
| Plum | 26,391 | 2% |
| Baldwin | 20,708 | 2% |
| West Mifflin | 18,916 | 2% |
Data: the Census Bureau's Population Estimates. Places here means cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city runs into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Allegheny County.
What stands out
Allegheny County has 50 places with 2,500 or more residents, 12 of them above 10,000, more than 100% of counties. Each is its own search market: people look for a plumber in Pittsburgh or in the next town over, not in the county. Local SEO means giving each of those cities its own page for each service you offer, which is what RankGuarantee™ is built to produce.
Allegheny County has 1,224,825 residents, which ranks 36th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of −2.1% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 33,827 employer locations, 27.6 per 1,000 residents.
39% of residents (472,805 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Who else is in the results
The table below measures Allegheny County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: the number of locations, how that number has moved, and how many are very small.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
The beauty salons category is the most contested in Allegheny County: 597 locations, 3.0x the density of a typical county, and up 2.2% since 2017. Physicians offices (1,094 locations, 2.2x) and law offices (680 locations, 1.9x) also run above a normal county. The electrical contractors category is the least contested here at 0.9x typical (259 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 21.4% since 2017 to 301 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 12.5% to 1,094 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 263 of 301 locations (87%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Allegheny County authorized 3,953 housing units in 2023 and 3,297 in 2025, about 17% fewer; 2025 still works out to 26.9 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 51% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,698 against 2,466 a year earlier (−31.1%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Allegheny County are residential remodelers (1.5x typical) and insurance agencies and brokerages (1.3x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

| Oakland County, MI | 73.7 | 1,270,426 | -0.3% | -0.3% | 56.4% |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources are listed above.
St. Louis County, MO is the closest match, scoring 73.3 against Allegheny County's 73.7. Erie County, NY is the furthest from it, scoring 64.5. The small-business mix differs too: 58.2% of Baltimore County, MD's locations have fewer than five employees, against 54.8% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

FAQ
Our fees are flat and monthly with no setup fee and no contract: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. Gold and Platinum include a fully managed, custom-built website.
SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Allegheny County, beauty salons is especially contested (3.0x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We work in six-month planning cycles, with no contract, and report each month.
More than most. Allegheny County scores 73.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 186th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 75th of the 400 markets we cover. Beauty salons is the densest category here, at 3.0 times the typical county. That raises the value of city-and-service pages and strong reviews.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Allegheny County are physicians offices (1,094), full-service restaurants (1,075) and law offices (680). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are beauty salons (3.0x) and physicians offices (2.2x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Allegheny County has 50 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Pittsburgh, Bethel Park, Monroeville, Plum and Baldwin. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches such as "near me", and much of what people search for in Allegheny County depends on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy at the start, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Allegheny County business.
