Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
54.7/ 100
Rank 709 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 276 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Berks County scores 54.7, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about Berks County: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county where new home permits are accelerating this year. Below, eight measures set it beside each other county.
Each bar places Berks County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes local search here
Many towns, many searches: Berks County counts 16 places of 2,500 or more residents (2 above 10,000), more than 96% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Berks County has 432,821 residents, which ranks 167th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +0.9% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 8,510 employer locations, 19.7 per 1,000 residents.
60% of residents (258,010 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Your competition
This table sets Berks County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations there are, how that has changed, and how many are very small.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. How we calculate this
In Berks County, the beauty salons category is the most contested, with 158 locations at 2.3 times the typical density, down 0.6% since 2017. Landscaping services (206 locations, 1.5x) and general automotive repair (160 locations, 1.4x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the insurance agencies and brokerages category (103 locations) is below typical density at 0.7x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Physicians offices grew fastest, up 29.1% since 2017 to 173 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Law offices went the other way, down 16% to 105 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 77 of 89 locations (87%) have fewer than five employees.
A word of caution: these are business counts and say nothing about searches. We do not have, and do not claim, search volumes or traffic for any keyword; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.
Demand signal
Units authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Berks County authorized 493 housing units in 2021 and 380 in 2025, about 23% fewer; 2025 still works out to 8.8 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 85% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 790 against 222 a year earlier (+255.9%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Berks County are landscaping services (1.5x typical) and roofing contractors (1.2x typical). Rankings take time, so a rise in permits is a reason to begin now, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

FAQ
You pay a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our system for local landing pages, is $495 a month on its own. There is no honest fixed timeline for SEO. Rankings build over time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we can publish. Beauty salons is the most contested category in Berks County at 2.3x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We work in six-month cycles, show you the movement each month, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Berks County scores 54.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 709th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 276th of the 400 markets we cover. Beauty salons, at 2.3 times the typical county. 57.7% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops commonly have thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Berks County are full-service restaurants (279), landscaping services (206) and physicians offices (173). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are beauty salons (2.3x) and landscaping services (1.5x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever ones you cover. Berks County has 16 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Reading, Wyomissing, Shillington, Birdsboro and West Reading. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in Berks County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Frequently both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
No contract, no setup fee, cancel anytime. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, continuing page management and rank tracking, and a dedicated account manager who reports to you monthly.
