Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsBuilding in Philadelphia County is picking up this year, which shapes how SEO should be built here. GetPhound is an SEO agency for small businesses: city-by-city landing pages, Google Maps and AI search optimization, and flat monthly plans with no contracts. Below is the data behind the Philadelphia County market.
Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
40.8/ 100
Ranked 1,221 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 367 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How the index is built
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Philadelphia County scores 40.8, which is less contested than most.
What shapes SEO in Philadelphia County is more than the score. It is a county where new home permits are accelerating this year, and it is a county whose population is flat or shrinking. The eight measures below show how it compares with each other county.
Every bar compares Philadelphia County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Building is picking up in Philadelphia County: 3,178 housing units permitted from January through August against 1,792 in the same months last year (+77.3%), stronger than 91% of counties. SEO gradually builds, so a rise in permits is a reason to start work before the new households start searching.
Philadelphia County has 1,550,542 residents, which ranks 24th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted −3.3% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 29,876 employer locations, 19.3 per 1,000 residents.
Philadelphia County is spread out, with 1,550,542 residents and Philadelphia as its largest place. People search by the nearest town or by "near me", so a local SEO plan covers the service area and not just one town name.
Demand signal
Housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Philadelphia County authorized 25,257 housing units in 2021 and 3,366 in 2025, about 87% fewer; 2025 still works out to 21.7 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 60% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 3,178 against 1,792 a year earlier (+77.3%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Philadelphia County are residential remodelers (1.1x typical) and real estate agents and brokers (1.0x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Who else is in the results
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. Method
The law offices category is the most contested in Philadelphia County: 953 locations, 2.1x the density of a typical county, and down 6.9% since 2017. Beauty salons (461 locations, 1.9x) also runs above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.2x typical (91 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 44.3% since 2017 to 394 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 18.5% to 545 locations. The tiniest competitors are in residential remodelers: 462 of 532 locations (87%) have fewer than five employees.
The numbers show who competes, not how much demand there is. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so read crowding as a reason to plan and a quiet category as an opening.

Wayne County, MI is the closest match, scoring 38.7 against Philadelphia County's 40.8. Marion County, IN is the furthest from it, scoring 60.3. The small-business mix differs too: 66.7% of Brooklyn, NY's locations have fewer than five employees, against 60.2% here. SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Philadelphia County, law offices is notably contested (2.1x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We work in six-month planning cycles, with no contract, and report each month.
Less than most. Philadelphia County scores 40.8 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 1221st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 367th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices, at 2.1 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 60.2% of local-search locations, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: consistent SEO tends to hold ground where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Philadelphia County are full-service restaurants (1,178), law offices (953) and physicians offices (545). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (2.1x) and beauty salons (1.9x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever ones you cover. In Philadelphia County that is typically the main towns plus the surrounding area, and RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each place you cover, 25 new pages a month on the $495 plan and 25 to 100 on Organic Growth.
Absolutely. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and much of what people search for in Philadelphia County depends on them.
It may. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
You can cancel anytime and there is no setup fee. Your plan covers the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and a single account manager familiar with your Philadelphia County business.
