Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
38.5/ 100
Rank 1,289 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 375 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Prince George's County scores 38.5, which is less contested than most.
Two features set Prince George's County apart: it is a high-income county, and it is also a county with many sizeable cities and towns. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
The bars place Prince George's County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Communities
The Census Bureau's latest estimates, by place. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| City or town | Residents (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Bowie | 57,254 | 6% |
| College Park | 34,187 | 4% |
| Laurel | 29,400 | 3% |
| Greenbelt | 24,360 | 3% |
| Hyattsville | 20,662 | 2% |
| New Carrollton | 13,405 | 1% |
Data: the Census Bureau's Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, just the portion inside Prince George's County is counted.
What stands out
Prince George's County is an affluent market: median household income is $97,171, higher than 92% of U.S. counties. Customers with that kind of budget tend to research before they hire, so reviews, depth of content and a website that explains the work carry more weight than a single ranking. Search engine optimization here means being credible on every page a buyer might open.
Prince George's County has 947,430 residents, which ranks 57th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted −2% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 16,244 employer locations, 17.1 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Prince George's County: the largest, Bowie, has about 6% of residents, and others include College Park (34,187), Laurel (29,400), Greenbelt (24,360) and Hyattsville (20,662). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
73% of residents (694,734 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
The field you would rank in
The table below measures Prince George's County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations there are, how that has changed, and how many are very small.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. See the method
The janitorial services category is the most contested in Prince George's County: 243 locations, 1.7x the density of a typical county, and up 9% since 2017. Residential remodelers (367 locations, 1.3x) and dentists (306 locations, 1.2x) also run above a normal county. The full-service restaurants category is the least contested here at 0.5x typical (335 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 21.5% since 2017 to 367 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 17.7% to 65 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 127 of 135 locations (94%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep this in mind: these are business counts and say nothing about searches. We do not have, and do not claim, search volumes or traffic for any keyword; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Prince George's County authorized 5,928 housing units in 2022 and 2,090 in 2025, about 65% fewer; 2025 still works out to 22.1 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 59% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,322 against 1,590 a year earlier (−16.9%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Prince George's County are residential remodelers (1.3x typical) and roofing contractors (1.1x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

Solano County, CA is the closest match, scoring 42.7 against Prince George's County's 38.5. Honolulu County, HI is the furthest from it, scoring 56.9. The small-business mix differs too: 64.4% of Hudson County, NJ's locations have fewer than five employees, against 59% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Questions we hear
Our fees are flat and monthly with nothing to sign and no setup fee: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. A fully managed, custom-built website comes with Gold and Platinum.
SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how contested your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can build. In Prince George's County, janitorial services is especially contested (1.7x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
Less than most. Prince George's County scores 38.5 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 1289th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 375th of the 400 markets we cover. Janitorial services, at 1.7 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 59% of local-search locations, which often means thin websites to outrank. That argues for starting early: steady SEO tends to hold its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Prince George's County are physicians offices (413), residential remodelers (367) and full-service restaurants (335). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are janitorial services (1.7x) and residential remodelers (1.3x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Prince George's County has 17 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Bowie, College Park, Laurel, Greenbelt and Hyattsville. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and much of what people search for in Prince George's County depends on them.
It may. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Your plan covers the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Prince George's County business.
