Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
79.9/ 100
Sitting at rank 93 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 38 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Gwinnett County scores 79.9, which is more contested than most.
What shapes SEO in Gwinnett County is more than the score. It is a county with unusually many local-search businesses for its size, and it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
The bars place Gwinnett County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Place | Population (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Peachtree Corners | 42,136 | 4% |
| Duluth | 32,350 | 3% |
| Lawrenceville | 31,015 | 3% |
| Sugar Hill | 25,889 | 3% |
| Suwanee | 22,913 | 2% |
| Snellville | 22,067 | 2% |
Data: the Census Bureau's Population Estimates. The list covers cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city spills into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Gwinnett County.
What stands out
Local search is contested ground in Gwinnett County: 64.9 employer locations per 10,000 residents across the 15 categories we track, denser than 88% of counties. With that many businesses chasing the same map pack and first-page results, a generic website loses; pages that target a specific service in a specific city have a better chance.
Gwinnett County has 983,526 residents, which ranks 52nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +2.7% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 27,222 employer locations, 27.7 per 1,000 residents.
The larger places in Gwinnett County are Peachtree Corners (42,136), Duluth (32,350), Lawrenceville (31,015), Sugar Hill (25,889) and Suwanee (22,913). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
75% of residents (734,709 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Who you would rank against
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. Read 2.0x as double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
The janitorial services category is the most contested in Gwinnett County: 389 locations, 2.6x the density of a typical county, and up 20.8% since 2017. Real estate agents and brokers (637 locations, 2.6x) and roofing contractors (139 locations, 2.4x) also run above a normal county.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 60.5% since 2017 to 499 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 605 of 637 locations (95%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. How many people search for a service and how quickly a page can rank depend on factors public data does not show, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Comparable counties
We matched Gwinnett County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Market | LSCI | People | Change since 2020 | Local-business change since 2017 | Locations under 5 staff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gwinnett County, GA (this page) | 79.9 | 983,526 | +2.7% | +16.6% | 67.5% |
| Palm Beach County, FL | 88 | 1,533,801 | +2.8% | +13.4% | 68.5% |
| Orange County, FL | 75.1 | 1,471,416 | +2.9% | +21.9% | 64.4% |
| Hillsborough County, FL | 73.4 | 1,535,564 | +5.2% | +17.5% | 64.5% |
| Lee County, FL | 80.8 | 834,573 | +9.7% | +22.8% | 65.5% |
| El Paso County, CO | 70.9 | 744,215 | +1.9% | +10.5% | 66.2% |
| Seminole County, FL | 83 | 484,271 | +2.8% | +9.7% | 65.4% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
Palm Beach County, FL is the closest match, scoring 88 against Gwinnett County's 79.9. El Paso County, CO is the furthest from it, scoring 70.9. The small-business mix differs too: 64.4% of Orange County, FL's locations have fewer than five employees, against 67.5% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.
Housing demand
Housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Gwinnett County authorized 5,603 housing units in 2024 and 3,924 in 2025, about 30% fewer; 2025 still works out to 39.9 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 64% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 2,393 against 2,882 a year earlier (−17%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Gwinnett County are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and roofing contractors (2.4x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. The speed of the climb depends on how contested your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can build. In Gwinnett County, janitorial services is especially contested (2.6x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. Gwinnett County scores 79.9 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 93rd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 38th of the 400 markets we cover. Janitorial services is the densest category here, at 2.6 times the typical county. 67.5% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which commonly means thin websites to outrank. If anything, it makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews matter more.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Gwinnett County are full-service restaurants (852), real estate agents and brokers (637) and insurance agencies and brokerages (563). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are janitorial services (2.6x) and real estate agents and brokers (2.6x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Gwinnett County has 13 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Peachtree Corners, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in Gwinnett County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy up front, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Gwinnett County business.
