Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
71.8/ 100
Sitting at rank 227 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 99 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How the score works
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Lane County scores 71.8, which is more contested than most.
Two things stand out about Lane County: it is a county where new home permits are slowing this year, and it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
Each bar sets Lane County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
The search picture
Building is slowing in Lane County (−37.6% in permits so far this year, 458 units against 734). Slower construction shifts demand toward upkeep, so pages built around repair, maintenance and replacement searches deserve more of the effort.
Lane County has 381,181 residents, which ranks 196th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of −0.5% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 10,143 employer locations, 26.6 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Lane County: the largest, Eugene, has about 47% of residents, and others include Springfield (61,085), Cottage Grove (10,623), Florence (9,470) and Junction City (7,072). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
25% of residents (96,875 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Where demand is heading
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Lane County authorized 2,136 housing units in 2021 and 1,535 in 2025, about 28% fewer; 2025 still works out to 40.3 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 65% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 458 against 734 a year earlier (−37.6%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Lane County are real estate agents and brokers (2.8x typical) and roofing contractors (1.7x typical). Rankings take time, so a rise in permits is a reason to begin now, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Who else is in the results
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. See the method
In Lane County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 269 locations at 2.8 times the typical density, up 35.9% since 2017. Law offices (189 locations, 1.7x) and janitorial services (99 locations, 1.7x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category (110 locations) is below typical density at 0.9x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 35.9%, so the competition is still building. Physicians offices went the other way, down 13.7% to 183 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 251 of 269 locations (93%) have fewer than five employees.
One caution: the table counts businesses, not searches. No keyword search volume or traffic figures are claimed here; a crowded category is a sign that more sites are competing, not a forecast of results.
Comparable counties
We matched Lane County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.

| East Baton Rouge Parish, LA | 65.9 | 448,467 | -1.8% | +1.3% | 57.8% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Westmoreland County, PA is the closest match, scoring 68.4 against Lane County's 71.8. East Baton Rouge Parish, LA is the furthest from it, scoring 65.9. The small-business mix differs too: 57.7% of Jackson County, OR's locations have fewer than five employees, against 59.7% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

FAQ
Pricing is flat and monthly. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page engine, is $495 a month on its own. The Organic Growth plans add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, and cost $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
A fixed SEO timeline would not be honest. Rankings build over time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Lane County at 2.8x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We work in six-month cycles, show you the movement each month, and you can cancel anytime.
More than most. Lane County scores 71.8 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 227th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 99th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers leads on density, at 2.8 times the typical county. 59.7% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops often have thin websites to outrank. That raises the value of city-and-service pages and strong reviews.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Lane County are full-service restaurants (331), real estate agents and brokers (269) and law offices (189). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.8x) and law offices (1.7x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Lane County has 8 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Eugene, Springfield, Cottage Grove, Florence and Junction City. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in Lane County depend on them.
It can. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Frequently both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. The monthly fee covers onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the pages and content that come with your plan, ongoing page management and rank tracking, and one account manager who sends you a report every month.
