Market at a glance
Local Search Competition Index
64.5/ 100
Sitting at rank 395 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 176 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. See the method
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. New Haven County scores 64.5, which is close to the middle of the pack.
What shapes SEO in New Haven County is more than the score. It is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county whose business base is flat or shrinking. Below, eight measures set it beside each other county.
Each bar sets New Haven County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2021), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates. Connecticut changed from counties to planning regions in 2023; this page uses the counties that County Business Patterns still reports. Population and income are 2021 estimates and business counts are 2021.
The search picture
Many towns, many searches: New Haven County counts 27 places of 2,500 or more residents (22 above 10,000), more than 99% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
New Haven County has 863,700 residents, which ranks 71st of 3,143 U.S. counties (2021 estimate), with population change of −0.1% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 19,249 employer locations, 22.3 per 1,000 residents.
The field you would rank in
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2021), not a measure of search volume. See the method
In New Haven County, the law offices category is the most contested, with 504 locations at 2.0 times the typical density, down 11.1% since 2017. Beauty salons (248 locations, 1.8x) and physicians offices (589 locations, 1.7x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the real estate agents and brokers category (147 locations) is below typical density at 0.7x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 31.5% since 2017 to 292 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Beauty salons went the other way, down 16.8% to 248 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 127 of 147 locations (86%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a headcount of local businesses. It says nothing about search volume or how fast any site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Comparable counties
We matched New Haven County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.

| Bernalillo County, NM | 66.1 | 671,586 | -0.7% | +2.2% | 58.1% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Jackson County, MO is the closest match, scoring 62.6 against New Haven County's 64.5. Camden County, NJ is the furthest from it, scoring 58.8. The small-business mix differs too: 54.1% of Hartford County, CT's locations have fewer than five employees, against 58% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Common questions
You pay a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our system for local landing pages, is $495 a month on its own. The Organic Growth plans add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, and cost $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
There is no honest fixed timeline for SEO. Rankings build over time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we can publish. Law offices is the most contested category in New Haven County at 2.0x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. You see the movement each month in six-month planning cycles, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. New Haven County scores 64.5 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 395th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 176th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices is the densest category here, at 2.0 times the typical county. 58% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops commonly have thin websites to outrank. That is a case for starting early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in New Haven County are full-service restaurants (772), physicians offices (589) and law offices (504). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (2.0x) and beauty salons (1.8x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. New Haven County has 27 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by New Haven, Waterbury, Hamden, Meriden and West Haven. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in New Haven County depend on them.
It can help. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Frequently both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
There is no contract and no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. The monthly fee covers onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the pages and content that come with your plan, continuing page management and rank tracking, and a dedicated account manager who reports to you monthly.
