Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsPima County has 5 places of 2,500 or more residents, which shapes how SEO should be built here. We are an SEO agency built for small businesses: local landing pages for each city you serve, Google Maps and AI search work, flat monthly plans and no contracts. Here is the data behind the Pima County market.
Market at a glance
Local Search Competition Index
57.7/ 100
Sitting at rank 606 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 251 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Pima County scores 57.7, which is close to the middle of the pack.
What shapes SEO in Pima County is more than the score. It is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county with heavy new home construction for its size. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar compares Pima County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
The search picture
Many towns, many searches: Pima County counts 5 places of 2,500 or more residents (4 above 10,000), more than 80% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Pima County has 1,063,162 residents, which ranks 44th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +1.9% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 21,083 employer locations, 19.8 per 1,000 residents.
35% of residents (368,305 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Where people live

| City or town | People (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Tucson | 547,239 | 51% |
| Marana (part) | 58,430 | 5% |
| Oro Valley | 48,311 | 5% |
| Sahuarita | 36,356 | 3% |
| South Tucson | 4,521 | 0% |

Your competition
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
In Pima County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested, with 707 locations at 2.7 times the typical density, up 39.4% since 2017. Law offices (465 locations, 1.5x) and physicians offices (628 locations, 1.5x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the landscaping services category (277 locations) is below typical density at 0.8x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Roofing contractors grew fastest, up 40.7% since 2017 to 76 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Law offices went the other way, down 9% to 465 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 669 of 707 locations (95%) have fewer than five employees.
These numbers describe the competition, not the demand. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so a crowded category calls for planning and a quiet one is an opening.
Housing demand
New housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Pima County authorized 6,284 housing units in 2021 and 4,658 in 2025, about 26% fewer; 2025 still works out to 43.8 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 68% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 3,150 against 2,969 a year earlier (+6.1%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Pima County are real estate agents and brokers (2.7x typical) and roofing contractors (1.2x typical). Rankings take time, so a rise in permits is a reason to begin now, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Look-alike markets
We matched Pima County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Place | Index | People | Growth since 2020 | How local businesses changed since 2017 | Tiny locations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pima County, AZ (this market) | 57.7 | 1,063,162 | +1.9% | +5.4% | 60.5% |
| New Haven County, CT | 64.5 | 863,700 | -0.1% | -1.7% | 58% |
| Jackson County, MO | 62.6 | 718,560 | +0.2% | +1.3% | 57.2% |
| Duval County, FL | 73.6 | 1,030,822 | +3.5% | +10.3% | 61.4% |
| Tulsa County, OK | 73.6 | 682,868 | +2% | +3.4% | 57.9% |
| Macomb County, MI | 60.1 | 875,101 | -0.7% | +4.9% | 58.4% |
| Lake County, IN | 56.1 | 500,598 | +0.4% | +0.6% | 57% |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
New Haven County, CT is the closest match, scoring 64.5 against Pima County's 57.7. Duval County, FL is the furthest from it, scoring 73.6. The small-business mix differs too: 57% of Lake County, IN's locations have fewer than five employees, against 60.5% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Results build gradually and depend on the competition, your website and what we can publish. Real estate agents and brokers is the most contested category in Pima County at 2.7x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We plan in six-month cycles and show you the movement monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Pima County scores 57.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 606th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 251st of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers leads on density, at 2.7 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 60.5% of local-search locations, which frequently means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: consistent SEO tends to hold ground where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Pima County are real estate agents and brokers (707), physicians offices (628) and full-service restaurants (596). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (2.7x) and law offices (1.5x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Pima County has 5 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and South Tucson. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and much of what people search for in Pima County depends on them.
It can help. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Frequently both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
There is no contract and no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Your monthly fee pays for onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, page management and rank tracking, and a dedicated account manager who reports to you monthly.
