Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsSan Diego County is a high-income market, and that changes how SEO should be built here. GetPhound is a search engine optimization agency for small businesses: pages for each city you serve, Google Maps and AI search work, and flat monthly plans with no contracts. The data behind the San Diego County market follows.
The market in numbers
Local Search Competition Index
72.6/ 100
Rank 210 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 89 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the score works
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. San Diego County scores 72.6, which is more contested than most.
Two features set San Diego County apart: it is a high-income county, and it is also a county with many sizeable cities and towns. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Every bar compares San Diego County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Communities
The largest places in San Diego County by resident count. A local SEO plan can build pages for any of them, one per service you offer in each.
| Community | Population (2023 est.) | Share of county |
|---|---|---|
| San Diego | 1,388,320 | 42% |
| Chula Vista | 274,333 | 8% |
| Oceanside | 170,020 | 5% |
| Escondido | 148,122 | 5% |
| Carlsbad | 113,495 | 3% |
| El Cajon | 102,991 | 3% |
Data: the Census Bureau's Population Estimates. The list covers cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city spills into a neighboring county, just the portion inside San Diego County is counted.
What stands out
San Diego County is an affluent market: median household income is $103,476, higher than 95% of U.S. counties. Customers with that kind of budget tend to research before they hire, so reviews, depth of content and a website that explains the work carry more weight than a single ranking. Search engine optimization here means being credible on each page a buyer might open.
San Diego County has 3,269,973 residents, which ranks 5th of 3,143 U.S. counties; its population has moved −0.9% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 92,799 employer locations, 28.4 per 1,000 residents.
The bigger places in San Diego County are San Diego (1,388,320), Chula Vista (274,333), Oceanside (170,020), Escondido (148,122) and Carlsbad (113,495). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
16% of residents (508,011 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Your competition
For each local-search category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A 2.0x reading means twice as many businesses per resident as a typical county.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. Method
The real estate agents and brokers category is the most contested in San Diego County: 3,081 locations, 3.8x the density of a typical county, and up 32.2% since 2017. Law offices (2,489 locations, 2.6x) and dentists (1,943 locations, 2.1x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.9x typical (957 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 32.2%, so the competition is still building. Insurance agencies and brokerages went the other way, down 3.2% to 1,321 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 2,888 of 3,081 locations (94%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep in mind that this is a count of local businesses. It tells you nothing about search volume or how quickly a site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
New construction
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Housing permits in San Diego County rose from 10,048 units in 2021 to 11,704 in 2025 (+16%), or 35.8 per 10,000 residents, more than in 60% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 6,392 against 7,543 a year earlier (−15.3%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in San Diego County are real estate agents and brokers (3.8x typical) and residential remodelers (1.7x typical). SEO takes time to build, so start before the demand shows up; pages already indexed and ranking are the ones new households meet first.

Orange County, CA is the closest match, scoring 77.1 against San Diego County's 72.6. Contra Costa County, CA is the furthest from it, scoring 64.9. The small-business mix differs too: 61% of King County, WA's locations have fewer than five employees, against 64.9% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.

SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how contested your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can build. In San Diego County, real estate agents and brokers is particularly contested (3.8x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. San Diego County scores 72.6 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 210th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 89th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers is the densest category here, at 3.8 times the typical county. 64.9% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops often have thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in San Diego County are real estate agents and brokers (3,081), full-service restaurants (2,618) and law offices (2,489). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are real estate agents and brokers (3.8x) and law offices (2.6x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. San Diego County has 18 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido and Carlsbad. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches such as "near me", and most local categories in San Diego County depend on them.
It can help. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Your plan covers the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your San Diego County business.
