Local Search Competition Index
66.7/ 100
Sitting at rank 342 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 151 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (like the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Bristol County scores 66.7, which is more contested than most.
Two features set Bristol County apart: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is also a county where most local businesses are tiny, with fewer than five employees. The eight measures that follow place it among every other county.
The bars place Bristol County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Community | People (2023 est.) | Share of county |
|---|---|---|
| New Bedford | 100,695 | 17% |
| Fall River | 93,840 | 16% |
| Taunton | 60,412 | 10% |
| Attleboro | 46,654 | 8% |
| North Attleborough Town | 30,943 | 5% |
Data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates. The list covers cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city runs into a neighboring county, only the part inside Bristol County is counted.
What shapes local search here
Many towns, many searches: Bristol County counts 5 places of 2,500 or more residents (5 above 10,000), more than 80% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Bristol County has 581,841 residents, which ranks 119th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +0.5% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 13,152 employer locations, 22.6 per 1,000 residents.
43% of residents (249,297 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Who else is in the results
For each local-search category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. Read 2.0x as twice as many businesses per resident as a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. How we calculate this
In Bristol County, the residential remodelers category is the most contested, with 334 locations at 1.9 times the typical density, up 22.8% since 2017. Beauty salons (175 locations, 1.9x) and landscaping services (338 locations, 1.8x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the insurance agencies and brokerages category (145 locations) is below typical density at 0.7x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 34.7% since 2017 to 167 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 15.7% to 188 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 158 of 167 locations (95%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep in mind that this is a count of local businesses. It tells you nothing about search volume or how quickly a site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Housing demand
Units authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Housing permits in Bristol County rose from 866 units in 2021 to 1,267 in 2025 (+46%), or 21.8 per 10,000 residents, less than in 59% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 708 against 761 a year earlier (−7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Bristol County are residential remodelers (1.9x typical) and landscaping services (1.8x typical). Because SEO builds gradually, the best time to start is before demand arrives; pages already indexed and ranking are the ones new households meet first.

Providence County, RI is the closest match, scoring 71.8 against Bristol County's 66.7. Douglas County, NE is the furthest from it, scoring 77.5. Delaware County, PA has 60.8% of its local-search locations under five employees against 64.5% in Bristol County. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Do the math
SEO is a monthly cost that pays back gradually, so the useful question is how many new customers it takes to pay for itself. Tell the calculator what a customer is worth and which plan you are weighing.
Questions we hear
You pay a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our system for local landing pages, is $495 a month on its own. Organic Growth plans, which add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). No setup fee, no contract.
No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Rankings take time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we publish. Residential remodelers is the most contested category in Bristol County at 1.9x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. You see the movement every month in six-month planning cycles, and you can cancel anytime.
More than most. Bristol County scores 66.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 342nd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 151st of the 400 markets we cover. Residential remodelers is the densest category here, at 1.9 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 64.5% of local-search locations, which commonly means thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Bristol County are full-service restaurants (462), landscaping services (338) and residential remodelers (334). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are residential remodelers (1.9x) and beauty salons (1.9x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Whichever you serve. Bristol County has 5 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by New Bedford, Fall River, Taunton, Attleboro and North Attleborough Town. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and much of what people search for in Bristol County depends on them.
It may. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Often both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
Cancel anytime: no contract, no setup fee. What you pay each month includes onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, continuing page management and rank tracking, and one dedicated account manager who reports to you each month.
