Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
66.7/ 100
Rank 341 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 150 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (like the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Butte County scores 66.7, which is more contested than most.
Two things stand out about Butte County: it is a county whose population is flat or shrinking, and it is a county where most local businesses are tiny, with fewer than five employees. The eight measures that follow place it among each other county.
The bars place Butte County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where the customers are
Place-by-place population from the latest Census Bureau estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Community | People (2023 est.) | Slice of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Chico | 101,301 | 49% |
| Oroville | 19,449 | 9% |
| Paradise | 8,285 | 4% |
| Gridley | 7,269 | 4% |
| Biggs | 1,921 | 1% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. Places are cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, just the portion inside Butte County is counted.
What stands out
Butte County has lost 2.1% of its population since the 2020 Census and has 207,172 residents. When a market is not growing, the searches that remain are a fixed pool, and ranking above a competitor is how a business takes share from it. That is the case for SEO in Butte County: the business that holds the first results holds the customers who are looking.
The bigger places in Butte County are Chico (101,301), Oroville (19,449), Paradise (8,285), Gridley (7,269) and Biggs (1,921). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
33% of residents (68,947 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Butte County authorized 2,050 housing units in 2021 and 997 in 2025, about 51% fewer; 2025 still works out to 48.1 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 71% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 537 against 677 a year earlier (−20.7%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Butte County are roofing contractors (2.1x typical) and residential remodelers (1.5x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a fall is a reason to put more weight on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Who you would rank against
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. Read 2.0x as two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. See the method
The law offices category is the most contested in Butte County: 96 locations, 1.6x the density of a typical county, and down 11.1% since 2017. Dentists (89 locations, 1.6x) and residential remodelers (95 locations, 1.5x) also run above a normal county. The full-service restaurants category is the least contested here at 1.0x typical (134 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 61% since 2017 to 95 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 38% to 116 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 70 of 76 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
The figures show who competes, not how much demand there is. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so read crowding as a reason to plan and a quiet category as an opening.

The small-business mix differs too: 58.6% of Winnebago County, IL's locations have fewer than five employees, against 63.5% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.

SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Butte County, law offices is notably contested (1.6x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. Butte County scores 66.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 341st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 150th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices is the densest category here, at 1.6 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 63.5% of local-search locations, which often means thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Butte County are full-service restaurants (134), physicians offices (116) and law offices (96). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (1.6x) and dentists (1.6x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Butte County has 4 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Chico, Oroville, Paradise and Gridley. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in Butte County depend on them.
It can help. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Frequently both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
You can cancel anytime and there is no setup fee. Your plan covers the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy at the start, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and a single account manager familiar with your Butte County business.
