Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsBefore you hire an SEO company in Cook County, look at the field: Cook County has 113 places of 2,500 or more residents. GetPhound provides search engine optimization for local businesses on flat monthly plans, with no setup fee and no contract, and we would start from the numbers below.
The market in numbers
Local Search Competition Index
68.8/ 100
Ranked 291 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 129 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Cook County scores 68.8, which is more contested than most.
Two features set Cook County apart: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is also a county whose population is flat or shrinking. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
Each bar places Cook County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Cook County has 113 places with 2,500 or more residents, 79 of them above 10,000, more than 100% of counties. Each is its own search market: people look for a plumber in Chicago or in the next town over, not in the county. Local SEO means giving each of those cities its own page for each service you offer, which is what RankGuarantee™ is built to produce.
Cook County has 5,087,072 residents, which ranks 2nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed −3.6% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 134,846 employer locations, 26.5 per 1,000 residents.
Who else is in the results
This table sets Cook County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: the number of locations, how that number has moved, and how many are very small.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not search volumes. See the method
The law offices category is the most contested in Cook County: 4,014 locations, 2.7x the density of a typical county, and down 6.8% since 2017. Dentists (2,777 locations, 2.0x) and real estate agents and brokers (2,478 locations, 2.0x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.8x typical (1,270 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 14.8% since 2017 to 2,478 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 15% to 2,849 locations. The tiniest competitors are in residential remodelers: 2,697 of 2,901 locations (93%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a headcount of local businesses. We do not guess at search volume or climbing speed, which this count cannot show; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Where demand is heading
Units authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Cook County authorized 8,325 housing units in 2022 and 5,308 in 2025, about 36% fewer; 2025 still works out to 10.4 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 80% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 3,204 against 3,884 a year earlier (−17.5%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Cook County are real estate agents and brokers (2.0x typical) and residential remodelers (1.9x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and falling permits are a reason to emphasize repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Markets like this one
We matched Cook County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| County | LSCI | Residents | Growth since 2020 | How local businesses changed since 2017 | Tiny locations |

| Cook County, IL (this page) | 68.8 | 5,087,072 | -3.6% | -0.6% | 66.1% |
| Queens, NY | 57.9 | 2,252,196 | -6.4% | +2.4% | 69.1% |
| Los Angeles County, CA | 65.6 | 9,663,345 | -3.5% | +7.5% | 66.5% |

| Dallas County, TX | 63 | 2,606,358 | -0.2% | +4.2% | 58.9% |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
Queens, NY is the closest match, scoring 57.9 against Cook County's 68.8. Brooklyn, NY is the furthest from it, scoring 47.4. The small-business mix differs too: 58.9% of Dallas County, TX's locations have fewer than five employees, against 66.1% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.
Population by place

Questions we hear
We charge a flat monthly fee with nothing to sign and no setup fee: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. Gold and Platinum include a fully managed, custom-built website.
SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. The speed of the climb depends on how contested your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can build. In Cook County, law offices is especially contested (2.7x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We work in six-month planning cycles, with no contract, and report each month.
More than most. Cook County scores 68.8 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 291st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 129th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices is the densest category here, at 2.7 times the typical county. 66.1% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops often have thin websites to outrank. That raises the value of city-and-service pages and strong reviews.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Cook County are full-service restaurants (4,260), law offices (4,014) and residential remodelers (2,901). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (2.7x) and dentists (2.0x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Cook County has 113 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Chicago, Cicero, Schaumburg, Evanston and Arlington Heights. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. All Organic Growth plans include Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and much of what people search for in Cook County depends on them.
It can help. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and an account manager who knows your Cook County business.
