Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
63/ 100
Sitting at rank 450 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 197 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How the index is built
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Dallas County scores 63, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about Dallas County: it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county with unusually many local-search businesses for its size. Below, eight measures set it beside each other county.
Every bar compares Dallas County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Dallas County has 25 places with 2,500 or more residents, 20 of them above 10,000, more than 99% of counties. Each is its own search market: people look for a plumber in Dallas or in the next town over, not in the county. Local SEO means giving each of those cities its own page for each service you offer, which is what RankGuarantee™ is built to produce.
Dallas County has 2,606,358 residents, which ranks 8th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed −0.2% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 70,472 employer locations, 27.0 per 1,000 residents.
Who else is in the results
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. Read 2.0x as two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. How we calculate this
The law offices category is the most contested in Dallas County: 2,179 locations, 2.9x the density of a typical county, and up 1.8% since 2017. Physicians offices (2,181 locations, 2.1x) and dentists (1,492 locations, 2.1x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.6x typical (499 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 45.2% since 2017 to 575 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 9.7% to 2,181 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 1,074 of 1,265 locations (85%) have fewer than five employees.
The figures show who competes, not how much demand there is. Search volume and how fast a page can rank depend on factors that public data does not reveal, so treat a crowded category as a reason to plan and a quiet one as an opening.
Housing demand
New housing units authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Dallas County authorized 18,799 housing units in 2021 and 12,358 in 2025, about 34% fewer; 2025 still works out to 47.4 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 71% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 8,289 against 8,263 a year earlier (+0.3%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Dallas County are real estate agents and brokers (1.9x typical) and roofing contractors (1.5x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Similar markets
We matched Dallas County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.
| Market | Index | Residents | Growth since 2020 | How local businesses changed since 2017 | Tiny locations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas County, TX (this page) | 63 | 2,606,358 | -0.2% | +4.2% | 58.9% |
| Sacramento County, CA | 58.1 | 1,584,288 | 0% | +10.8% | 58.1% |
| Harris County, TX | 53.4 | 4,835,125 | +2.2% | +9.6% | 59.5% |
| Marion County, IN | 60.3 | 968,460 | -0.9% | 0% | 56.8% |
| Macomb County, MI | 60.1 | 875,101 | -0.7% | +4.9% | 58.4% |
| Pima County, AZ | 57.7 | 1,063,162 | +1.9% | +5.4% | 60.5% |
| Tarrant County, TX | 55.9 | 2,182,947 | +3.4% | +11.6% | 57.1% |
The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Sources as above.
Sacramento County, CA is the closest match, scoring 58.1 against Dallas County's 63. Harris County, TX is the furthest from it, scoring 53.4. The small-business mix differs too: 56.8% of Marion County, IN's locations have fewer than five employees, against 58.9% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Common questions
We charge a flat monthly fee with no setup fee and no contract: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. The Gold and Platinum plans add a fully managed, custom-built website.
SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Dallas County, law offices is especially contested (2.9x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We plan in six-month cycles, with no contract, and report monthly.
About average. Dallas County scores 63 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 450th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 197th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices leads on density, at 2.9 times the typical county. 58.9% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Dallas County are physicians offices (2,181), law offices (2,179) and full-service restaurants (2,080). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (2.9x) and physicians offices (2.1x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever ones you cover. Dallas County has 25 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Dallas, Irving, Garland, Mesquite and Grand Prairie. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings carry the most weight for "near me" searches, and most of the local categories in Dallas County rely on them.
It can. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clear, well-structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and let SEO build the asset that reduces your reliance on them.
Cancel whenever you like; there is no setup fee. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and an account manager who knows your Dallas County business.
