Market snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
65.6/ 100
Ranked 365 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 162 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Los Angeles County scores 65.6, which is more contested than most.
What shapes SEO in Los Angeles County is more than the score. It is a county whose population is flat or shrinking, and it is a county with many sizeable cities and towns. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
The bars place Los Angeles County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
Place-by-place population from the latest Census Bureau estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Place | People (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | 3,820,914 | 40% |
| Long Beach | 449,468 | 5% |
| Santa Clarita | 224,028 | 2% |
| Glendale | 187,050 | 2% |
| Lancaster | 166,236 | 2% |
| Palmdale | 161,404 | 2% |
Data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Los Angeles County.
What stands out
Los Angeles County has lost 3.5% of its population since the 2020 Census and has 9,663,345 residents. When a market is not growing, the searches that remain are a fixed pool, and ranking above a competitor is how a business takes share from it. That is the case for SEO in Los Angeles County: the business that holds the first results holds the customers who are looking.
The bigger places in Los Angeles County are Los Angeles (3,820,914), Long Beach (449,468), Santa Clarita (224,028), Glendale (187,050) and Lancaster (166,236). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
Demand signal
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Los Angeles County authorized 26,935 housing units in 2022 and 22,446 in 2025, about 17% fewer; 2025 still works out to 23.2 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 57% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 20,632 against 13,580 a year earlier (+51.9%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Los Angeles County are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and residential remodelers (1.3x typical). Because SEO builds gradually, the best time to start is before demand arrives; pages that are already indexed and ranking meet new households first.
Your competition
For each local-search category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. See the method
The law offices category is the most contested in Los Angeles County: 8,373 locations, 3.0x the density of a typical county, and up 8.2% since 2017. Real estate agents and brokers (6,285 locations, 2.6x) and physicians offices (9,470 locations, 2.4x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.4x typical (1,272 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 37.6% since 2017 to 6,285 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 8.7% to 9,470 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 5,757 of 6,285 locations (92%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep this in mind: these are business counts and say nothing about searches. We have no search volumes or traffic for any keyword, and we do not claim any; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.

Questions we hear
Our fees are flat and monthly with nothing to sign and no setup fee: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. Gold and Platinum include a fully managed, custom-built website.
Nobody can promise a date for SEO, since it builds gradually. How quickly pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Los Angeles County, law offices is notably contested (3.0x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We plan in six-month cycles, with no contract, and report monthly.
More than most. Los Angeles County scores 65.6 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 365th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 162nd of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices leads on density, at 3.0 times the typical county. Fewer than five employees work at 66.5% of local-search locations, which often means thin websites to outrank. That makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews more important, not less.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Los Angeles County are physicians offices (9,470), law offices (8,373) and full-service restaurants (8,227). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (3.0x) and real estate agents and brokers (2.6x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Los Angeles County has 82 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Clarita, Glendale and Lancaster. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most of the local categories in Los Angeles County rely on them.
It may. AI search (GEO) optimization is part of our plans: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Often both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO builds more slowly and then works without paying per click. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy at the start, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Los Angeles County business.
