Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
41.8/ 100
Rank 1,188 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 363 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for its residents. Fort Bend County scores 41.8, which is less contested than most.
Two things stand out about Fort Bend County: it is a county whose business base is expanding quickly, and it is one of the faster-growing counties in the country. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Every bar compares Fort Bend County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Market profile
The whole business base in Fort Bend County is expanding: employer locations across every industry rose 31.2% from 2017 to 2022, faster than 99% of counties, to 17,654. A growing economy means more households, more offices and more searches for local services, and rankings earned now serve a larger market later.
Fort Bend County has 916,778 residents, which ranks 61st of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +11.4% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 17,654 employer locations, 19.3 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Fort Bend County: the largest, Sugar Land, has about 12% of residents, and others include Missouri City (70,902), Houston (42,962), Fulshear (42,616) and Rosenberg (41,104). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
60% of residents (549,456 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Where people live
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Community | Population (2023 est.) | Slice of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar Land | 108,515 | 12% |
| Missouri City (part) | 70,902 | 8% |
| Houston (part) | 42,962 | 5% |
| Fulshear | 42,616 | 5% |
| Rosenberg | 41,104 | 4% |
| Stafford (part) | 17,071 | 2% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city extends into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Fort Bend County.
Where demand is heading
Units authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Housing permits in Fort Bend County rose from 10,762 units in 2021 to 12,369 in 2025 (+15%), or 134.9 per 10,000 residents, more than in 97% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 7,275 against 8,002 a year earlier (−9.1%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Fort Bend County are real estate agents and brokers (1.4x typical) and roofing contractors (1.1x typical). Because search rankings take time to build, a rise in permits is a reason to start now, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Who you would rank against
This table sets Fort Bend County against the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations exist, how the count has changed, and how many are tiny.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not search volumes. How we calculate this
The dentists category is the most contested in Fort Bend County: 513 locations, 2.0x the density of a typical county, and up 36.8% since 2017. Physicians offices (660 locations, 1.8x) and beauty salons (220 locations, 1.5x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.4x typical (107 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 73.3% since 2017 to 182 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Landscaping services went the other way, down 8.5% to 107 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 306 of 329 locations (93%) have fewer than five employees.
A word of caution: these are business counts and say nothing about searches. We have no search volumes or traffic for any keyword, and we do not claim any; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.

SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. The speed of the climb depends on the competition in your category, the strength of your website and Google Business Profile, and how much we can build. In Fort Bend County, dentists is notably contested (2.0x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
Less than most. Fort Bend County scores 41.8 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 1188th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 363rd of the 400 markets we cover. Dentists is the densest category here, at 2.0 times the typical county. 65.3% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Fort Bend County are physicians offices (660), dentists (513) and full-service restaurants (489). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are dentists (2.0x) and physicians offices (1.8x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it only shows how many other sites you would share the results with.
The ones you serve. Fort Bend County has 12 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Sugar Land, Missouri City, Houston, Fulshear and Rosenberg. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
We do. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in Fort Bend County depend on them.
It may. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy at the start, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and an account manager who knows your Fort Bend County business.
