Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
53.4/ 100
Rank 749 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 283 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Harris County scores 53.4, which is close to the middle of the pack.
What shapes SEO in Harris County is more than the score. It is a county with many sizeable cities and towns, and it is a county with heavy new home construction for its size. The eight measures below show how it compares with each other county.
Each bar sets Harris County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
The largest places in Harris County by resident count. A local SEO plan can build pages for any of them, one per service you offer in each.
| Community | Population (2023 estimate) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Houston (part) | 2,265,027 | 47% |
| Pasadena | 146,716 | 3% |
| Baytown (part) | 79,140 | 2% |
| La Porte | 36,991 | 1% |
| Deer Park | 33,176 | 1% |
| Bellaire | 17,016 | 0% |
Data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city extends into a neighboring county, just the portion inside Harris County is counted.
What stands out
Many towns, many searches: Harris County counts 27 places of 2,500 or more residents (15 above 10,000), more than 99% of counties. Searchers use town names, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town, not one page for the whole county.
Harris County has 4,835,125 residents, which ranks 3rd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +2.2% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 109,874 employer locations, 22.7 per 1,000 residents.
43% of residents (2,066,903 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
The field you would rank in
We divide each local-search category's employer locations by population and compare that with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the businesses per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
In Harris County, the law offices category is the most contested, with 3,160 locations at 2.3 times the typical density, up 6.6% since 2017. Physicians offices (3,716 locations, 1.9x) and dentists (2,279 locations, 1.7x) also run above a normal county. At the other end, the landscaping services category (677 locations) is below typical density at 0.4x, which means fewer competing sites to outrank.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 56.4% since 2017 to 887 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 4.5% to 3,716 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 1,549 of 1,720 locations (90%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep in mind that this is a count of local businesses. It tells you nothing about search volume or how quickly a site can climb, and we do not guess at either; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
New construction
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Harris County authorized 38,789 housing units in 2022 and 30,879 in 2025, about 20% fewer; 2025 still works out to 63.9 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 82% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 18,596 against 20,327 a year earlier (−8.5%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Harris County are real estate agents and brokers (1.4x typical) and insurance agencies and brokerages (1.1x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.

These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Bexar County, TX is the closest match, scoring 48.8 against Harris County's 53.4. Maricopa County, AZ is the furthest from it, scoring 63.6. The small-business mix differs too: 63.6% of Maricopa County, AZ's locations have fewer than five employees, against 59.5% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

ChatGPT, AI Overviews and more
We organize your pages and business details so AI tools find clear, consistent facts. A mention in an AI answer cannot be guaranteed by anyone; this improves the odds.
Written content
Every Organic Growth plan includes technical fixes, on-page optimization and new content each month that answers real customer questions.
SEO agency, SEO company, SEO services, local SEO, search engine optimization: all describe the work of getting Harris County businesses found on Google, Maps and AI search. You work with one account manager and see the numbers each month. If you also want ads, we manage Google, Bing and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) as well.
Pricing

Run your own figures
SEO is a monthly cost that pays back gradually, so the useful question is how many new customers it takes to pay for itself. Fill in what a customer is worth to you and pick the plan you are considering.
Questions
Pricing is a flat monthly fee. RankGuarantee™, our local landing page system, is $495 a month on its own. Organic Growth plans, which add Google Maps work, AI search optimization, content and more landing pages, are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum). No setup fee, no contract.
No honest SEO provider can give a fixed timeline. Rankings take time and depend on the competition, your site and the work we publish. Law offices is the most contested category in Harris County at 2.3x typical, so it is the one to be patient with. We plan in six-month cycles and show you the movement monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
About average. Harris County scores 53.4 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 749th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 283rd of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices, at 2.3 times the typical county. 59.5% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which often means thin websites to outrank. That is a case for starting early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Harris County are physicians offices (3,716), full-service restaurants (3,473) and law offices (3,160). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (2.3x) and physicians offices (1.9x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Whichever ones you cover. Harris County has 27 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Houston, Pasadena, Baytown, La Porte and Deer Park. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches such as "near me", and much of what people search for in Harris County depends on them.
It can. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the same work that earns rankings builds the content those tools use.
Frequently both. Google Ads can bring calls within days, but each click costs money; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. When you need leads right away, begin with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no contract and no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. What you pay each month includes onboarding (keyword research, a website audit and a six-month strategy), the landing pages and content your plan includes, page management and rank tracking, and one dedicated account manager who reports to you each month.
