Market at a glance
Local Search Competition Index
63.7/ 100
Ranked 431 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 188 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the score works
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Ocean County scores 63.7, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two features set Ocean County apart: it is a county where many residents live outside any city or town, and it is also a county with many sizeable cities and towns. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
Each bar sets Ocean County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
The largest places in Ocean County by resident count. A local SEO plan can build pages for any of them, one per service you offer in each.
| City or town | Residents (2023 estimate) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Point Pleasant | 19,429 | 3% |
| Beachwood | 11,153 | 2% |
| Point Pleasant Beach | 4,897 | 1% |
| South Toms River | 3,736 | 1% |
| Tuckerton | 3,681 | 1% |
| Lakehurst | 2,703 | 0% |

The search picture
90% of Ocean County's residents (596,098 people) live outside any city or town, more than in 96% of counties. These customers search "near me" or by county name, not by a city, so pages and Google Business Profile service areas have to cover the county and not just the town centers.
Ocean County has 659,197 residents, which ranks 108th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed +3.4% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 14,736 employer locations, 22.4 per 1,000 residents.
The larger places in Ocean County are Point Pleasant (19,429), Beachwood (11,153), Point Pleasant Beach (4,897), South Toms River (3,736) and Tuckerton (3,681). Each is searched by name, so a business that serves several of them needs a page for each service in each town. That is what a local SEO plan from GetPhound builds.
Your competition
Each local-search category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. Read 2.0x as two times the businesses per resident a typical county has.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. How we calculate this
The beauty salons category is the most contested in Ocean County: 215 locations, 2.0x the density of a typical county, and down 3.2% since 2017. Physicians offices (475 locations, 1.8x) and residential remodelers (351 locations, 1.8x) also run above a normal county. The insurance agencies and brokerages category is the least contested here at 0.6x typical (147 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 30.5% since 2017 to 351 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Law offices went the other way, down 12.7% to 213 locations. The tiniest competitors are in residential remodelers: 305 of 351 locations (87%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep this in mind: this counts businesses, not searches. We do not have, and do not claim, search volumes or traffic for any keyword; crowding shows that more sites compete, not what results will be.
Housing demand
Units authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Ocean County authorized 4,006 housing units in 2023 and 2,926 in 2025, about 27% fewer; 2025 still works out to 44.4 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 69% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,479 against 2,064 a year earlier (−28.3%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Ocean County are residential remodelers (1.8x typical) and electrical contractors (1.7x typical). SEO takes time to build, so start before the demand shows up; pages already indexed and ranking are the ones new households meet first.
Comparable counties
We matched Ocean County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, local-search competition and how fast the business base is growing.

| Ocean County, NJ (this market) | 63.7 | 659,197 | +3.4% | +5.2% | 62.4% |
| Clark County, WA | 65.1 | 521,150 | +3.5% | +14.8% | 61.4% |
| Adams County, CO | 56 | 533,365 | +2.7% | +16.3% | 63.9% |
| Brevard County, FL | 73.3 | 643,979 | +6.2% | +8.4% | 63.1% |

| Spokane County, WA | 72.5 | 551,455 | +2.2% | +13.3% | 59.8% |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Clark County, WA is the closest match, scoring 65.1 against Ocean County's 63.7. Brevard County, FL is the furthest from it, scoring 73.3. The small-business mix differs too: 66.2% of El Paso County, CO's locations have fewer than five employees, against 62.4% here. If you already do SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.

Try your own numbers
SEO is a monthly cost that pays back gradually, so the question that matters is how many new customers it must bring in to cover itself. Enter what a customer is worth to you and the plan you are weighing.
Common questions
Our fees are flat and monthly with nothing to sign and no setup fee: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. Gold and Platinum include a fully managed, custom-built website.
SEO builds over time and no one can promise a date. How fast pages climb depends on how contested your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can build. In Ocean County, beauty salons is especially contested (2.0x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
About average. Ocean County scores 63.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 431st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 188th of the 400 markets we cover. Beauty salons, at 2.0 times the typical county. 62.4% of local-search locations have fewer than five employees, which frequently means thin websites to outrank. That is a reason to start early: steady SEO tends to keep its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Ocean County are physicians offices (475), full-service restaurants (474) and residential remodelers (351). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are beauty salons (2.0x) and physicians offices (1.8x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.
Whichever ones you cover. Ocean County has 6 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Point Pleasant, Beachwood, Point Pleasant Beach, South Toms River and Tuckerton. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Yes. Every Organic Growth plan includes Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, along with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and most local categories in Ocean County depend on them.
It can help. Our plans include AI search (GEO) optimization: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the work that earns rankings also builds the content those tools use.
Frequently both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer but keeps working with no per-click charge. If you need leads now, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and use SEO to build the asset that lowers your dependence on them.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy to begin with, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Ocean County business.
