Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsLocal search in Bergen County is crowded, at 79.4 businesses per 10,000 residents, and that shapes how SEO should be built here. GetPhound is an SEO agency for small businesses: pages for each city you serve, Google Maps and AI search work, and flat monthly plans with no contracts. Here is the data behind the Bergen County market.
The market in numbers
Local Search Competition Index
81.1/ 100
Ranked 78 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 30 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (including the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) compete for the same customers. Bergen County scores 81.1, which is among the most contested markets in the country.
Two features set Bergen County apart: it is a county with unusually many local-search businesses for its size, and it is also a county with many sizeable cities and towns. The eight measures that follow place it among each other county.
Each bar sets Bergen County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Market profile
Local search is contested ground in Bergen County: 79.4 employer locations per 10,000 residents across the 15 categories we track, denser than 95% of counties. With that many businesses chasing the same map pack and first-page results, a generic website loses; pages that target a specific service in a specific city have a better chance.
Bergen County has 957,736 residents, which ranks 56th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +0.2% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 31,871 employer locations, 33.3 per 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Bergen County: the largest, Hackensack, has about 5% of residents, and others include Fort Lee (39,700), Fair Lawn (35,564), Garfield (32,456) and Englewood (29,624). Searchers use their own town's name, so each place is its own ranking opportunity.
16% of residents (148,657 people) live outside any incorporated place, so county-level and "near me" searches matter as much as city names.
Where people live
Place-by-place population from the latest Census Bureau estimates. People search by town name, so each of these is a separate set of searches and a possible landing page for each service you offer.
| Place name | People (2023 estimate) | Share of county |

| Hackensack | 45,736 | 5% |
| Fort Lee | 39,700 | 4% |
| Fair Lawn | 35,564 | 4% |
| Garfield | 32,456 | 3% |

The field you would rank in
Here is how Bergen County compares with the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: how many locations exist, how the count has changed, and how many are tiny.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a measure of search volume. Method
The beauty salons category is the most contested in Bergen County: 529 locations, 3.5x the density of a typical county, and down 0.9% since 2017. Dentists (779 locations, 2.9x) and physicians offices (1,122 locations, 2.9x) also run above a normal county.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 12.1% since 2017 to 536 locations, so new rivals keep arriving there. Physicians offices went the other way, down 16.3% to 1,122 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 281 of 327 locations (86%) have fewer than five employees.
Keep in mind that this is a count of local businesses. We do not guess at search volume or climbing speed, which this count cannot show; it shows how many other sites would be in the results with you.

Norfolk County, MA has 59.7% of its local-search locations under five employees against 63.6% in Bergen County. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.
Where demand is heading
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Permits in Bergen County have stayed within a narrow range: 3,803 units in 2025 against 4,023 in 2021, or 39.7 per 10,000 residents, more than in 64% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 2,403 against 2,360 a year earlier (+1.8%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Bergen County are landscaping services (1.9x typical) and residential remodelers (1.9x typical). SEO takes time to build, so start before the demand shows up; pages already indexed and ranking are the ones new households meet first.

Questions we hear
We bill one flat monthly fee with nothing to sign and no setup fee: $495 for RankGuarantee™ landing pages, or $1,495, $2,495 or $3,495 for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Organic Growth plans. Gold and Platinum include a fully managed, custom-built website.
SEO builds gradually, and nobody can promise a date. How quickly pages climb depends on the competition in your category, the strength of your website and Google Business Profile, and how much we can build. In Bergen County, beauty salons is especially contested (3.5x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. Our planning cycles run six months with no contract, and you get a report each month.
More than most. Bergen County scores 81.1 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 78th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 30th of the 400 markets we cover. Beauty salons, at 3.5 times the typical county. 63.6% of local-search locations are tiny, with fewer than five employees, and tiny shops commonly have thin websites to outrank. If anything, it makes city-and-service pages and strong reviews matter more.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Bergen County are physicians offices (1,122), full-service restaurants (995) and dentists (779). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are beauty salons (3.5x) and dentists (2.9x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether SEO will work for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
The ones you serve. Bergen County has 58 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Hackensack, Fort Lee, Fair Lawn, Garfield and Englewood. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for each service in each city you serve (25 new pages a month on the $495 plan, 25 to 100 on Organic Growth), so the plan follows your service area, not the county line.
Absolutely. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, plus on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Maps rankings matter most for searches like "near me", and much of what people search for in Bergen County depends on them.
It may. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: well-structured pages and consistent business details give AI tools more to work with. We cannot promise a mention in an AI answer, and neither can anyone else, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Usually a mix of both. Google Ads can send calls within days and costs per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Your monthly plan includes the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy at the start, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and a single account manager familiar with your Bergen County business.
