Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsBefore you hire an SEO company in Manhattan, look at the field: the field in Manhattan has stopped growing. We provide search engine optimization for local businesses on flat monthly plans, with no setup fee and no contract, and the numbers below are our starting point.
Snapshot
Local Search Competition Index
62.7/ 100
Ranked 458 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 202 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many local-search businesses (such as the lawyers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, salons and agents that customers find on Google and the map) are chasing the same residents. Manhattan scores 62.7, which is near the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out about Manhattan: it is a borough where local-search businesses have stopped growing, and it is a borough whose population is flat or shrinking. The eight measures below show how it compares with each other county.
Every bar compares Manhattan alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
The field has not grown in Manhattan: employer locations in the local-search categories we track changed −9.8% from 2017 to 2022, slower than 92% of counties. A steadier set of competitors makes the results easier to read and easier to move up in.
Manhattan has 1,597,451 residents, which ranks 22nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of −5.7% since the 2020 Census. Across all industries it has 95,072 employer locations, 59.5 per 1,000 residents.
Manhattan is dense, and customers search by neighborhood and by "near me" as much as by the city name. Local SEO here comes down to a precise service area, strong Google Business Profile signals and pages for the services you actually offer.
Who else is in the results
Here is how Manhattan compares with the typical U.S. county for fifteen categories that live on Google and the map: the number of locations, how that number has moved, and how many are very small.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about search volume. See the method
The law offices category is the most contested in Manhattan: 3,550 locations, 7.7x the density of a typical county, and down 8% since 2017. Beauty salons (1,207 locations, 4.7x) and full-service restaurants (3,998 locations, 3.7x) also run above a normal county. The landscaping services category is the least contested here at 0.1x typical (51 locations), so there are fewer rival pages for those searches.
Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 18.6% to 544 locations. The tiniest competitors are in real estate agents and brokers: 1,124 of 1,405 locations (80%) have fewer than five employees.
This is a picture of the competition, not of demand. The number of searches and the speed at which a page can rank depend on things public data cannot show, so read crowding as a reason to plan and a quiet category as an opening.
Similar markets
These six counties are the nearest matches to Manhattan in our 400-market set when we compare size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth together.
| County | LSCI | Population | Population change since 2020 | Local-business change since 2017 | Locations under 5 staff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manhattan, NY (this market) | 62.7 | 1,597,451 | -5.7% | -9.8% | 54.9% |
| Honolulu County, HI | 56.9 | 989,408 | -2.7% | -3.4% | 57% |
| San Francisco County, CA | 68 | 808,988 | -7.4% | -5.1% | 56.3% |
| Multnomah County, OR | 68.9 | 789,698 | -3.2% | -5.9% | 56.7% |
| Oakland County, MI | 73.7 | 1,270,426 | -0.3% | -0.3% | 56.4% |
| Hennepin County, MN | 69.5 | 1,258,713 | -1.8% | +0.4% | 61.4% |
| Allegheny County, PA | 73.7 | 1,224,825 | -2.1% | -2% | 54.8% |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, local-search competition, small-business mix and growth. Same sources as above.
Honolulu County, HI is the closest match, scoring 56.9 against Manhattan's 62.7. Oakland County, MI is the furthest from it, scoring 73.7. The small-business mix differs too: 61.4% of Hennepin County, MN's locations have fewer than five employees, against 54.9% here. If you already invest in SEO in one of these markets, the comparison shows how similar the competition is, not what your results will be.
Demand signal
Housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Manhattan authorized 4,467 housing units in 2024 and 2,984 in 2025, about 33% fewer; 2025 still works out to 18.7 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 65% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,388 against 1,260 a year earlier (+10.2%).
The construction-linked categories already most contested in Manhattan are real estate agents and brokers (3.5x typical) and insurance agencies and brokerages (1.1x typical). Since rankings build slowly, rising permits are a reason to start today, and a drop is a reason to lean harder on repair, replacement and service-specific pages.
Do the math
SEO is a monthly cost that pays back gradually, so the useful question is how many new customers it has to bring in to pay for itself. Enter what a customer is worth to you and the plan you are weighing.

Nobody can promise a date for SEO, because it builds gradually. How fast pages climb depends on how crowded your category is, how strong your website and Google Business Profile are, and how much we can publish. In Manhattan, law offices is especially contested (7.7x a typical county), so expect that category to take longer. We work in six-month planning cycles, with no contract, and report each month.
About average. Manhattan scores 62.7 on our Local Search Competition Index, ranking 458th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 202nd of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices leads on density, at 7.7 times the typical county. That argues for starting early: steady SEO tends to hold its position where fewer rivals are building.
Across the fifteen categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Manhattan are full-service restaurants (3,998), law offices (3,550) and physicians offices (2,224). Measured against a typical county, the most contested are law offices (7.7x) and beauty salons (4.7x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether SEO works for you; it shows how many other sites you would be sharing the results with.
Yes. RankGuarantee™ builds local landing pages for the services and the places you serve, and in a dense borough like Manhattan that means pages aimed at the neighborhoods and nearby areas where your customers actually are, alongside your Google Business Profile.
Absolutely. Each Organic Growth plan covers Google Business Profile optimization, citations and review management, together with on-page and technical SEO, strategic content and AI search (GEO) work. Map results matter most for searches such as "near me", and most local categories in Manhattan depend on them.
It can. We include AI search (GEO) optimization in our plans: clean, structured pages and consistent business information give AI tools more to draw on. Nobody can guarantee an AI mention, and we do not promise one, but the work behind rankings is also the content those tools draw from.
Usually a mix of both. Ads can send calls within days and charge per click; SEO takes longer to build and keeps working without a per-click charge. If leads cannot wait, start with ads (we manage Google Ads, Bing and Meta too) and build SEO as the asset that makes you less dependent on ads.
There is no setup fee, and you can cancel anytime. Each month you get the keyword research, website audit and six-month strategy up front, then the pages and content in your tier, rank tracking, and one account manager who knows your Manhattan business.
